So, I caught the first episode of Dragon Ball Super the other day. It was a kinda poorly translated English sub, but the translation was good enough to get the point across.
I thought it was a pretty good start to the series, in all honesty.
There was the typical Toriyama humor in the show. Seeing Goku drive a tractor was pretty amusing. The Beerus scene was pretty cool. Piccolo stalking Gohan was definitely a highlight, as was Majin Buu complaining to Mr. Satan during Satan’s recognition conference.
Very lighthearted overall. Not much happened in the grand scheme of things. Next week’s episode is Vegeta and family going on vacation, so that episode ought to be a real trip.
I hope this episode brings the same sense of excitement and wonder that watching the originals did. Definitely looks promising though.
Here’s the opening and ending pieces for your enjoyment.

Legally , you can’t. However, there’s an enormously popular video streaming website used by many that just may have Dragon Ball Super episode 1. Quality may vary though.

Since you seem more in tune with this can you explain to me what this is all about? What is Dragon Ball Kai that I sometimes see on TV?
I grew up watching Dragonball on Toonami, slowly transitioned into watching the entire series on japanese VHS tapes with subtitles (the first series I got was Buu while the American TV series was still on Frieza) but then a few weekends ago I just watched some movie on Youtube at my friends house with Gold Frieza vs SS God Goku and I am pretty much lost regarding the time line of events.

Ok... first off, Kai is essentially a “director’s cut” of DBZ. It uses remastered (but basically the same) footage from DBZ, but eliminates a big portion of the filler. It’s a bigger deal here in the states because it came with a full redub, with much better VA performances, and a better voice for Freeza. They stopped after the Cell arc for awhile, but the Buu arc of Kai was done (shoddily), and just finished in Japan last week. No US Buu arc Kai as of yet, but it is in the works.
It’s still DBZ. Just cut down. Watch it for the new dub (at least up through Cell).
After Kai, we got Battle of Gods. It takes place four years after the defeat of Majin Buu. The God of Destruction, Beerus, comes to Earth, looking for the Super Saiya-Jin God. Goku gets his butt royally whooped, and then the rest of the movie happens.
Then comes the newest movie, Resurrection F (Revival of Freeza), where Freeza’s men wish him back to life. He trains, gets a new form, brings 1,000 soldiers, and squares off against the gang.
Then, DB Super premiers. It’s six months after the defeat of Majin Buu, but Beerus is awake earlier here than he is in Battle of Gods. Super will essentially be retelling events of Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, so there may be some retconning.
In Battle of Gods, Beerus and his attendant, Whis, hit Goku with the revelation that there are 12 different universes, and they are all part of universe 7. After the retelling of Battle of Gods and F, Goku and Vegeta (at the very least) travel to universe 6. We know that Beerus has a peer, named Champa, another presumed God of destruction, most likely for universe 6, and who also has an attendant, who’s a female counterpart to Whis.
Resurrection F has just been dubbed and hits a limited number of theaters from Aug 4-12. I suggest at least watching DBZ Kai in English up through Cell, watching regular DBZ up through the end of the Buu saga, catching Battle of Gods, and then going to see Resurrection F in theaters, and you’ll be pretty well caught up and familiar with where things have been.
I can clarify anything you need me to.

So DB Super is coming soon to US TV? The voices on DB Kai are strange to me lol. I can stream Battle of the God’s online my friend who put me on to the Gold Freeza vs. God Goku told me about that one too. Resurrection F is going to come to US theaters? We watch the Japanese version which was okay except you know, you don’t know what they are saying lol.

DB Super, as long as Toei isn’t difficult with licensing, should come to US TV in the near future, but Buu arc Kai needs to come to the US first, for consistency. I’d say within a year, we’ll see Super on American television though.

Out of curiosity though, where did you get the intel that they travel to another Universe?

This right here. Translated comments straight from the creator himself. Kanzenshuu is the website I use for any and all DB related news, as it’s generally quite accurate, and has been around for a long time.

Interesting! So those characters haven’t arrived in any of the shows or the manga, if they continue the manga, yet? I was curious. I’m pretty huge into DBZ universe and I was like, “WHERE..WHERE DID I MISS THIS?!”

Sorry, forgot to add - Are the movies not on par with the new story? Because if Beerus is up earlier, would that imply that this is a different universe we’re watching? Perhaps the movies take place in another universe to the one we’re aware of?

There is a manga adaption being done by a guy under the name Toyotaro. It seems to be a little loose, and it’s following the anime, not the other way around as in most cases. And also, yes, there are deviations from the recently released films. The first episode of DB Super is 6 months after the defeat of Majin Buu, and Beerus is indeed awake, whereas Battle of Gods is three or four years after Buu’s defeat, and Beerus just wakes up in that one. However, excluding the timeline discrepancy, the events should follow a similar pattern, though of course, changes will be necessary.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
For example, the Super Saiyan God ritual, as it requires six pure Saiyans. Videl wouldn’t even be pregnant with Pan in the series, as she was with the movie, which allowed Goku to ascend to the next level. There’s going to be some workarounds, I’m sure. Resurrection F also has a little bit of Pan, but they should be able to work around that movie a little easier.

I’m not really sure the manga sites too well, but probably MangaStream or MangaFox. But it’s in Japanese.
